Resort Guide 2013: #12 Waterville Valley, N.H.

Perhaps it’s fitting that family-owned Waterville would be especially popular with families. The Skiing Sununus—including father John, a former New Hampshire governor and chief of staff of the Bush I administration—apparently know how to keep other ski clans happy (No. 3 for Family Programs). “A wonderful place to take the family,” says one reader. Waterville has always been a hit with Boston skiers in general, thanks to its easy accessibility (No. 14). The short drive is especially appealing to parents, who, among other things, love the race/freeride program (the famous Black and Blue Trail Smashers club). Another big part of Waterville’s appeal is its lack of slopeside clutter; the resort village, Town Square, is down in the valley, connected by frequent shuttles. “It’s so nice to ski without condos on the mountain,” a reader notes. Terrain variety is not a strength (No. 24; “plan on repeating a lot of trails if you stay more than a day”) —unless you’re a parent ( “I can allow my kids to go off on their own and I’ll be able to find them at the bottom”). Families also love the good on-mountain food and the kid-approved terrain parks (both No. 5). As any parent knows, nothing promotes family peace like well-fed, tuckered-out kids.

WHAT’S NEW >> After what happened to 1967 Cy Young winner Jim Lonborg (blew his ACL at Heavenly), you’d think Red Sox brass would be wary of the whole skiing thing. But Waterville is now the official resort of Fenway Park.

ON-HILL LUNCH >> No contest: Watervillians love the Schwendi Hütte, located at the summit, for alpine ambience and great views.

FAMILY EXPERIENCE >> Waterville, once a World Cup venue, has a proud junior race program—the famous Black and Blue Trail Smashers club—which has nurtured many a great skier.
