The 21st annual Waterville Valley Athletic & Improvement Association (WVAIA) croquet championship was played on a glorious Labor Day at the court on Greeley Hill in north Waterville Valley.
Twenty players and “dead ball” keeper, Paula Miles, were all dressed in their traditional whites. Players were divided into two flights of four teams. The first round winners were Dan Newton, Mac Foster and Mike Nolan. Second place went to the team of Ed Roberts, Cindy Roberts and Maryellen Sakura. In the second round the winners were Dick Harris, Deb Nolan and Russ Miles. In second place were Tal Kersh, Vicki Goldberg and Jean Foster.
Those four teams competed in the championship playoffs. The team of Dan Newton, Mac Foster and Mike Nolan held on to their lead to go ahead and win despite desperate attempts by the out of contention teams to knock them out of play! Great game.
Everyone then moved on to the Silver Fox Inn for the end of season luncheon and awards. Susan Brunvand provided a delicious, as always, buffet which was enjoyed on her outside deck on a beautiful September day.
WVAIA and the weekly croquet players thank the White Mountain Athletic Club for their support and the Waterville Valley Golf Course personnel for the court upkeep. The players are happy that croquet has become a WVAIA-sponsored activity and your WVAIA membership makes the croquet season possible. See you next year!
