Easterner tapped for CEO of USSA

September 4, 2013

Former US Ski Team racer, Tiger Shaw (below), has been named to replace retiring USSA CEO and President Bill Marolt.  USSA is the national governing body for competitive skiing and snowboarding.

What makes this news even more exciting is that Tiger is an easterner through and through.  A native of Stowe, Vt., Tiger honed his skills at the Mt. Mansfield Ski Club, the Stratton Mt. School and at Dartmouth College where he was an NCAA All-American. He competed on the U.S. Ski Team on the World Cup circuit from 1983-91, scoring eight top-10 finishes. He was part of the U.S. Olympic team coached by Marolt. He also competed on the U.S. Pro Ski Tour for a year.

Peter Stokloza, CEO & Executive Director of Waterville Valley’s BBTS Snowsports Educational Foundation, says, “I know Tiger and have coached his children at camps.  He is an Eastern athlete through and through.  I know you will be as pleased as I am, that one of our own, and an Olympian, is taking the helm.”

USSA’s retiring President & CEO wrote to Stokloza:

Dear Peter:

Over the last 18 years we have built a Best in the World sports organization based on strong leadership at every level. Now, looking to the future, I am proud to inform you that Olympian Tiger Shaw has been appointed to serve as chief operating officer of the USSA, effective October 1. Tiger will then transition to the role of president and chief executive officer in the spring of 2014, at which time I will retire, as previously announced. Importantly, I will remain president and CEO through the Sochi Olympic Winter Games, and will continue serving as vice president of the International Ski Federation and as a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Board of Directors.

As an Olympian and nine-time U.S. Champion, Tiger knows firsthand what it takes to compete at the highest level. I had the opportunity to coach Tiger during the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo. I can tell you without a doubt that he will be an outstanding addition to our leadership team as we prepare for Sochi and beyond. He brings an exceptional combination of leadership skills, knowledge and experience, gained as an Olympian, USSA club coach, athlete parent, successful entrepreneur and business executive. Tiger has held a variety of key leadership roles, including director of inventory strategy at Dealertrack and most recently senior director at our partner Global Rescue, where he was responsible for business development and new markets, products and services. Few can match his success both on and off the slopes, and I’m confident that the USSA will be in good hands under his leadership.

This announcement only reinforces the USSA’s ability to achieve its goals, which remain the same. We are squarely focused on preparing for Sochi this February, ensuring that we have a world class support system for developing athletes and building a stronger financial base. I look forward to working closely with Tiger and the rest of our talented leadership team as we continue our long term vision of being Best in the World in Olympic skiing and snowboarding.

This is an exciting time for the USSA. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished as a team and the standard of athletic excellence that we’ve established. I look forward to continuing to lead through 2014 and providing athletes with an opportunity to achieve their Olympic dreams.

Sincerely,
Bill Marolt
President and CEO
U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association
