FINS & FEATHERS – CASTING FOR KIRBY
By Raymond Kucharski
Time to dig some worms and sharpen some hooks for the 4th annual Casting for Kirby youth fishing derby in Waterville Valley. Kirby is the one humongous fish that has been living in Waterville Valley since the ice age. On quiet nights one can sometimes hear the loud splashes as Kirby leaps out of the water. Kirby has never been caught but this may be the year some skilled youth will succeed in landing the monster.
The Casting for Kirby youth fishing derby takes place during Memorial Day Weekend on Saturday, May 25, 2013 on the shores of Waterville Valley’s Corcoran Pond. The $6 pre-registration fee includes a t-shirt and starter bait ($10 on event day) for the first 100 registrants. It is open to all youth ages 15 and under.
Registration and check in begins at 8:00 am in Town Square for the 3 age groups. The fishing derby begins at 8:30 am with staggered starting times. Age 7 and under start at 8:30 am, ages 8 to 11 and ages 12 to 15 starting at 8:45 am. There will be a top prize for Kirby or the largest fish caught and landed, as well as prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and the smallest fish in each age group.
Ensure receiving a t-shirt and starter bait and save time checking-in by pre-registering with Waterville Valley Recreation Department by calling 603-236-4695 or e-mailing [email protected].
The event is sponsored by the Town of Waterville Valley (Departments of Public Safety and Recreation), Pemigewasset Chapter of Trout Unlimited, N.H. Fish and Game, The Margret & H. A. Rey Center, Town Square and Walmart.
