Leadfoot Brenda checks in from the AT

June 10, 2012

(Several years ago Brenda Conklin, a Waterville Valley resident, decided to celebrate turning 60 years old by hiking the Appalachian Trail.  She’s been hitting the trail each spring/summer, doing it in bits and pieces, describing her AT plan to my son as “the AT for over 60’s.” – Jan)

Hello from Erwin, TN. The 537 miles of Virginia have passed under my feet. Twice we slept in the car at remote wilderness trail crossings. I met the bubble from GA, the largest bunching of hikers headed north. I said hello to 47 northbounders in one day; for a week there were 20-30 per day. Mt. Rogers (highest peak in VA) reminded me of New England’s rugged climbing/crawling. The wild ponies there were a highlight. Preston has shuttled several appreciative hikers into town. Abundant mountain laurel and rhododendron blossoms are like pink pom-poms cheering me on. Only one rain day in the last 12. Temps in the 80’s last week and 70’s this week. We drove to Davy Crockett’s birthplace in Limestone, TN. When I was 8 years old I wore a Davy Crockett* Halloween costume, complete with plastic fringe. Preston’s sense of humor and my map reading foibles keep us both laughing.  No complaints. (340 miles left to Springer Mountain, GA.)

* and sang this song:

Davy … Davy Crockett King of the Wild Frontier.
Born on a mountain top in Tennessee,
The greenest state in the land of the free.
Raised in the woods so he knew every tree.
Killed a bear when he was only three.
Davy … Davy Crockett King of the Wild Frontier.
