Waterville Valley resident, Brenda Conklin (right), sent me the following update from the Appalachian Trail.
Driving to the trail in Pennsylvania took 9 hours. Some put-ins are miles from the nearest motel, so a major thank-you is in order for Preston’s (Brenda’s husband!) shuttle service. 150 of the 230 AT miles in PA are done, leaving 80 miles for next June, when the rhododendrons will be blooming, the hunters will be gone, and the leaves will be back on the trees instead of in the trail. My AT journey is now half over, having hiked past the 1,100 mile mark. Time for a new pair of Vasque boots to replace my comfortable old friends that are coming apart. The picture of me and my shadow was taken early when the sun was coming in sideways. – Leadfoot
