Theatre Under the Stars Returns to Waterville Valley

June 19, 2013

Theatre Under the Stars and its Shakespeare in the Valley Outdoor Summer Fest returns to Waterville Valley Resort for the eighth summer season on June 28, 2013.

The theatre offers family fare at an outdoor stage in the heart of the resort village.  The 2013 season features six Main Stage evening shows performed by professional actors from all over the country.  Shows include, “The Original Practice Midsummer Night’s Dream” (where the audience knows more about the play than the actors), the foolishly farcical “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” the Young People’s Players romp through Bara Swain’s messed-up mythology in “It’s All Greek To Me,” the romantic “Love’s Labours Lost,” the audience-decides-the-plot in the hysterically funny “Interactive Three Musketeers,” and the greatest love story ever told, “Romeo and Juliet.”

The company also performs four different Sugar Coated Shakespeare Family Matinees where 2-person teams of professional actors weave an interactive 30 minute tapestry of Shakespeare and other celebrated classics.

A popular two week youth theatre day camp is offered from July 29 to August 9 for kids ages 5-17.

NEW in 2013, the company will debut the world premiere of a play written by one of its youth camp participants.  A wacky re-telling of the classic story, “Romeo and Juliette,” is the brainchild of 12-year-old Hannah Gohr, who won the opportunity to create the play as the recipient of the Marc P. Decoteau Prize, given each year in memory of a Waterville Valley resident who grew up within the theatre’s Kid Corps, joined the Army and was killed in action in Afghanistan at age 19.  The prize was created to help foster the artistic endeavors of young people.  As a Decoteau Prize winner, fledgling bard Gohr was matched with award-winning New York City playwright Bara Swain.

Gohr traveled to NYC and worked with Swain and Swain’s troupe of child actors to create the show, which underwent workshop rehearsals throughout the spring in New York City.  It will have its world premiere right here in Waterville Valley on Saturday, August 10, where it will be performed by the 5-10 year old campers during the popular “Kid Camp Double Feature Night.”

The costumes in Gohr’s “Romeo and Juliette” will be designed by the co-recipient of the 2012 Decoteau Prize, 14-year-old Shannon Nelson, who spent a weekend in New York City being mentored through the costume creation process by professional designer Beth Goldenberg.

Pack a blanket/low camp chair, picnic and beverage and head out for some world class “bare bones bard at its best” theatre in Waterville Valley this summer.  Main Stage shows take place rain or shine at the Gazebo Hill Amphitheatre located behind Town Square and the Ice Arena.  Sugar-Coated Shakespeare performances are held under the tent in the Town Square courtyard.  All shows and the youth acting camp are offered at low or no cost/pay-what-you-can in honor of Mark Paul Decoteau who lost his life in service to the word “free.”
