Backcountry Ski or Snowshoe Expedition

January 3, 2014

The Waterville Valley Athletic & Improvement Association’s (WVAIA) president, Dan Newton, will lead a backcountry ski and/or snowshoe expedition up the Green Mountain Logging Road on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014. There is no charge to participate in this guided excursion.

Meet Dan at the Town Square gazebo by 9 a.m.  Bring snacks, lunch and hot liquid as well as water.

Although somewhat overgrown in sections with small Beech trees and assorted evergreens, this off-trail excursion is a beautiful ski on flat terrain for the first half hour or so, and then a steady but gradual ascent to a small clearing about a half an hour from the Green Mountain ridge.  At this point, the group will stop for a quick lunch and then return the same way.  Note: there are several culvert ditches that require some care in negotiating, but generally speaking this is not a difficult ski trip. Estimated time for the ascent is 2 to 3 hours, and the descent 1 to 2 hours, depending on the speed of the group.
