The Black Bear Half Marathon and 5K Race were held in Waterville Valley on Sunday, Aug. 23. Congratulations to all the runners. I saw some familiar names in the results, including Waterville Valley Realty’s very own septuagenarian, Ray O’Hara. Ray ran the 5K race and placed first in his age group (Ray’s colleague, Frank Freeman, wanted me to point out that Ray was also the ONLY person in his age group!). This was Ray’s first 5K race and he finished a very respectable 31 out of 50 runners with a time of 0:30:35:7. I don’t care that he was the only guy in his age group … that’s darn impressive!
Rene Schwartz (above), GM of the White Mountain Athletic Club and last year’s winner of the Black Bear Half, faced some tough competition. He rose to the challenge and ran a great race, setting another personal record: 1 hr 37 mins for a 7:24 pace. Rene was first in his age group and finished in 11th place overall.
Rene said, “Not too shabby for a 52-year-old … Beating up the young guys!”
