Broomball week #4 results — CJ’S Penalty Box defeat Waterville Valley Rocks in thriller, 2-1.  The Crushers hold onto second place with 3-1 victory over Mad River Tavern.

The Waterville Valley Coed Broomball league-leading CJ’s Penalty Box saw their offensive juggernaut hit a bump in the road as they took the ice against an old rival the Waterville Valley Rolling Rocks.  In their first three games of this season, CJ’s scored 15 goals while allowing just 1 goal.  This combination of offense and defense places CJ’s Penalty Box as the favorite to repeat as the league champion in 2013.

CJ’s offense was no less impressive in this game as they brought a relentless, fast-braking attack against the WV Rocks defense.  The Rocks goal tender, Kevin O’Brien turned in an exceptional performance in net as he turned away as many as 50 shots throughout the game – keeping his team in contention to the end.  CJ’s forward Nick Dullea put CJ’s ahead at the 7:40 mark ending the first period with a 1-0 lead.  The Rocks Nate Blake, with an assist by Ray Hoyt, tied the score early in the second period.  With just over two minutes remaining in the 2nd period CJ’s regained the lead with a goal by Jay Duguay.  With the ball in the defensive zone for much of the game, the Rocks were unable to create any serious scoring chances as all-star goalie, Dana Gagnon, kept the Rocks scoreless throughout the final period.

The opening game of the night pitted the 2nd place “Crushers” (2-1) against a Mad River Tavern team still seeking their first win.  The first period was marked by team defense until a last minute lapse by Mad River Tavern (MRT) gave up a goal to the Crushers Mell Lefond with just 30 seconds on the clock.   A dedicated defensive effort and excellent goal tending by MRT’s Mike Bombara kept the Crushers at bay until Justin Atwood scored at 5:30 and Bruce McKay added another goal to put the Crushers in the lead 3-0.   MRT’s Jeff Furlone put his team on-the-board with just 1:30 remaining in the 2nd period.   Crusher’s net minder, Leah Bridgham, shutout MRT in the final period securing a 3-1 Crushers victory.

The last place Campton Mountain Yetis were no match for XXX (Triple X) as Jeff Meier scored a hat trick and J.P. Vallaincourt was flawless in net.  The Yetis made a valiant effort on defense keeping the game scoreless throughout the opening period.  Meier scored his first of three goals at 9:40 of the 2nd period then the flood gates opened.  Scores by Steven Patch and Meier gave XXX a 3-0 lead at the end of the period.   Meier completed his hat trick in the 3rd period and Travis Sherburne added a late goal giving XXX a 5-0 win.
