Five Summit Challenge – this weekend!

Waterville Valley Resort is hosting the first Denali 20000′ 5 Summit Challenge this weekend, Aug. 16-18, 2013.Denali Challenge Waterville Valley NH

Mt. Tecumseh, 2 Mt. Osceola Peaks, Welch & Dickey


Friday, Aug. 16 (Evening)

5-9pm             Hiker check-in – table at the Endless Summer Beach Bash [hosted by Recreation Department] on Corcoran Pond Beach.

–          Hikers given a goodie bag that contains maps, cards with the hikes, important phone numbers, event schedule and bandana.

–          Hikers will be asked to sign an indemnity and model release.

–          Bandana is to be displayed throughout the weekend, worn or on a pack to designate a hiker. All hikers will get the bandana whether they are doing the family hikes or the 5 peaks. The bandana will only be given once a hiker has signed a release.

–          Hikers can pay for Sunday “Alive After Five” BBQ at time of check in, or pay at the door on Sunday – $10.

–          Hikers & families can participate in Endless Summer Beach Bash & BBQ.

  • 5:30-7:30pm          Endless Summer Beach Bash – FREE (cash BBQ & beverages)
    – Live music, dancing
    – Beach volleyball
    – Campfire
    – Pinata smashing
    – Hulahoop competition
    – Cash BBQ (Beach Bash Plate w/ burger/dog, chips & drink-$5, burger or dog-$3, water/soda-$2, chips-1, pina colada & strawberry diaquiri smoothies-$3, s’more packets [make 2 s’mores]-$1, BYOB for ages 21+)
  • 7-9pm                    Friday Night Campfire on Corcoran Pond Beach – FREE!

8pm                 Hiker meet-up – Corcoran Pond Beach.

–          For hikers who want to find others to hike with or talk about hiking plans.  Waterville Valley Resort cannot guarantee that participants will find hiking partners.

Saturday, Aug. 17

–          Hikers on own to hike 5 peaks.

8am                 Information Booth Open for questions/details     Town Square

10am               Guided Family Hike to Goodrich Rock (FREE!)        Meet at Depot Camp

–          Family hikers make your way to Depot Camp where you will meet the hike leader.  Take trolley, drive or walk there.  Allow enough time to meet group by 10 a.m. (at least 30 minutes if traveling by trolley).  If taking trolley, inform driver that you’re going to Depot Camp.

–          Late hiker check-ins can be accommodated at Guided Family Hike trailhead – hike leader will have a group release for hikers to sign.

2-4pm             Indoor Climbing Wall Open (FREE to Denali registrants with bandana, or $5/climb, $10/3 climbs)           Recreation Department

5:30-8:30pm   Outdoor Concert with “Nobody’s Fault”                Town Square Courtyard

Post Hike        Hikers on own to enjoy Waterville Valley restaurants, shopping & activities.

Sunday, Aug. 18

–          Hikers on own to continue hiking the 5 peaks.

9am                 Information Booth Open for questions/details     Town Square 

10am               Guided Family Hike to Welch Ledges (FREE!)    Meet at Welch/Dickey Trailhead in Thornton

–          Family hikers make your way to the Welch and Dickey trailhead to meet the hike leader by 10am.  Hike will be to the first cliffs of Welch. (Hikers should leave Waterville Valley by 9:30am in order to arrive at the trailhead by 10am departure time)

–          Representatives from the Margret & H.A. Rey Center will be on hand at the Welch Ledges to talk about their conservation projects at the site.

–          Late hiker check-ins can be accommodated at Guided Family Hike trailhead – hike leader will have a group release for hikers to sign.

3pm                 ‘ALIVE AFTER FIVE’ BBQ   at Legends, Lower Courtyard in Town Square

–          $10 per person for BBQ.

–          ‘ALIVE AFTER FIVE’ hikers will be presented with a commemorative t-shirt and have photos taken.

Other details:

–          ‘ALIVE AFTER FIVE’ hikers are on the honor system that they completed the five hikes.  Hikers are encouraged to take photos of themselves at the tops of the peaks and email to  Photos may be be used on Waterville Valley Resort’s Facebook page  and in promotional media.

–          Extra ‘ALIVE AFTER FIVE’ t-shirts may be purchased for $15 at the BBQ.

–          Hikers should hike smart.  Wear sturdy hiking boots and be prepared with appropriate clothing, equipment and safety supplies to hike the peaks, including map, food, water, hat/sunscreen, flashlight & pack.  Know your abilities and choose appropriate hikes.

–          Family hike leaders will turn back anyone who is not wearing proper footwear.
