The Denali 5 Summit Challenge may not be the biggest event that Waterville Valley Resort hosts each summer; but, what it lacks in numbers, it gains in altitude!
Thirty-five hikers signed up for the challenge. There were competitors from Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. Among those who successfully summited five peaks totaling 20,000 feet (or more!) were the Brock family of Kansas who were vacationing in Waterville Valley. Dad, Matt, and son, Alex, accepted the challenge and summited five mountains by Sunday, Aug. 16. Margaret Turner, a Waterville Valley local, finished the challenge with gusto. The Mulder’s, a mother and son team, finished on Sunday afternoon as well. Many of the hiking groups reached 15,000 feet of vertical and enjoyed the challenge.
For those seeking less of a challenge, the resort offered two guided family hikes. On Saturday, Aug. 15, 21 folks enjoyed a hike to the Cascades, and on Sunday, Aug. 16, nearly a dozen people hiked to Goodrich Rock.
