Further proof that Waterville Valley is the birthplace of freestyle

October 29, 2011

In the fall of 2009 a new sign popped up at the entrance to Waterville Valley.

This prompted me to blog about Waterville Valley’s claim to be the birthplace of freestyle skiing.  The blog led to a telephone call from a producer at WMUR TV followed by a great piece on NH Chronicle about Waterville Valley’s freestyle history.

Despite the fancy carved sign, blog posts, and television show, there are still naysayers that deny Waterville Valley’s claim!

Let’s add another source to validate our claim.  SKIING Magazine!

I just received the November 2011 issue of SKIING in the mail.  As I was flipping through the magazine I found two interesting tidbits.  One is on page 73 in a “brief history of Eastern skiing” timeline:  1971. “Wayne Wong busts a Wong Mill in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, launching the freestyle movement.”

And, then on page 76, there’s a map of northern New England showing Waterville Valley with the notation:  “Birthplace of freestyle.”

So, you have it.  If SKIING Magazine says it’s true, then it must be.  Waterville Valley IS the birthplace of freestyle skiing!
