Gigi Estes is back at it … organizing, encouraging and reporting on Waterville Valley’s Nordic Silver Streaks. This group of senior cross country skiers meet on Wednesday mornings for a group ski followed by pastries, coffee and lunch at the Adventure Center.
Gigi wrote about their first gathering on Dec. 20…
The temperature was a balmy 29°F when 17 Nordics met at the Center. It was by far the largest turnout ever on a Wednesday before Christmas! What great conditions today. As we headed to the North End the trails were being groomed and tracked. Starting up Lower Osceola we met Brice as he was coming down. We were the first ones to ski on fresh corduroy and new tracks. What a treat; thank you, Brice. The snow was a bit sticky, we needed a quick stop for waxing. It had begun to snow gently; it was beautiful and magical, a true winter wonderland. We were spread out along the trail and my plan to take a group photo did not materialize. Several Nordics skied all of Moose Run, some as far as the junction or less. Two Nordics snowshoed. All of a sudden, the snowing ceased and the sun emerged, making the world sparkle. It turned colder and the wind picked up. We didn’t feel it but could hear it roar in the trees. At Bob’s Lookout billowing snow devils were swirling. Skiing back, as usual, was a rewarding gentle down. At the Nordic Center we enjoyed visiting while having lunch with coffee and pastries. Our next ski adventure will be on Wednesday, Jan. 3. A wonderful, peaceful holiday season to all of you.
NOTE: Gigi says the weather forecast for this coming Wednesday is fabulous with temps in the teens, no wind and “partly cloudy” which, of course, means “partly sunny”! There is a bit of snow in the forecast for Tuesday evening. PLEASE use some protection for your face. Gigi recommends Dermatone. Vaseline is also good, but Dermatone has sun protection, too. It has been available at the 1829 Outfitters in Town Square, next to the Nordic Center. You may also want to bring hand and/or toe warmers. Remember, it is never too cold for cross country skiing! Mark your calendars for two classic ski clinics on January 17 and January 31.
