Waterville Valley’s Nordic Silver Streaks met on Monday, Jan. 9. Read Gigi’s report, below.
What a day! It was chilly, but by the time 14 Nordics gathered (one more came later) it had warmed up to 4°F. And as you know, it is never too cold for cross country skiing. We all are hot stuff! It was sunny and totally wind-still. The trails were hard-packed snow, freshly groomed, the conditions very good and fast. Two Nordics snowshoed. For the others the highlight was the clinic with Kay. It began at the Teaching Area for strides and poling, proceeded to a small hill for snowplows, then up Snows Brook to practice all the techniques. Five Nordics skied Figure Tree, the others turned around at the junction below. Kay is such a wonderful instructor; we are so lucky. Some comments were: “Excellent,” “Great instruction, with patience,” “Lots of good tips,” “I love the review every winter,” “She get high marks; I learned a lot.” Thank you, THANK YOU, Kay.
Back at the Adventure Center in Town Square we were greeted by a roaring fire. Our après ski took place at the Center and we had a plethora of wonderful dishes. Skiing on this cold day actually used up more calories so we could eat more! All in all, another wonderful Nordics day.
Our next gathering hopefully will be Wednesday, Jan. 18, weather permitting.
