Hiking changes our brains

I really look forward to my early morning sojourns into the woods with my dog.  The sights, sounds and smells of nature are as cleansing, refreshing and invigorating as a morning shower.

The benefits of hiking may seem obvious.  It burns calories, increases your energy level, helps fight cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and relaxes.

Doctors are now saying that hiking can actually change our brains.  An article in collective-evolution.com cites a number of studies showing the beneficial effects of hiking on our brains.

  • Hiking in nature can stop negative, obsessive thoughts
  • Hiking while disconnected from technology boosts creative problem solving
  • Hiking outdoors can improve ADHD in children
  • Hiking in nature is great exercise and therefore boosts brainpower
