Shameless plug! This is my annual reminder that if you need firewood for this winter, contact my husband, Harry Stearns. Harry specializes in small deliveries of one-quarter to one cord of firewood. He delivers AND stacks the wood so you don’t even need to break a sweat.
Harry’s seasoned firewood is the same wood that we use to heat our own house. The type of firewood you use does matter. You’ll get the best burn for your buck with dried, or “seasoned,” wood. The ideal firewood has a moisture content of less than 20 percent. Wood with a higher moisture content may eventually burn; but, trust me, it is wicked hard to light and keep going.
According to an extension service newsletter I read, “dry firewood delivers more heat because less heat is used up evaporating water. Dry wood also burns more completely, ensuring a cleaner and safer fire. Incomplete combustion of wet wood produces dirty smoke that can accumulate as creosote in the chimney. If this creosote builds up, it can eventually ignite and cause a chimney fire.”
Once Harry has delivered your wood (preferably before the snow flies), you should cover it with a tarp if it is not stored in a covered location.

Now booking winter paint & home improvement projects
Harry is not only the “wood guy,” he is one heck of an awesome painter and the go-to guy for home repairs and improvements (especially those pesky small jobs that you don’t have the time or inclination to take care of yourself … and big contractors don’t want to be bothered with). Harry Stearns Painting & Home Repairs has been spiffing up Waterville Valley-region condominiums, homes and businesses since 1981. He’s had a super busy spring, summer and fall, but he’s beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel and has some openings for this winter. Call or text Harry at 603-254-9838 or email email@example.com.
