A former Waterville Valley resident is making a name for herself in the world of freeskiing. Jamie Crane-Mauzy is currently ranked #1 in the world by the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP).
Jamie and her family moved from Waterville Valley to Park City, UT a couple of years ago so that Jamie and her family could pursue their skiing dreams. Jamie is now 21 years old and a pro park and pipe skier. She was sidelined with injury the past two years but was able to finish her rookie season on the 2013 AFP World Tour. She has made her way to the top of the heap and is now the #1 ranked woman freeskier in the world! Jamie has competed in both Aspen X-Games where she was the first woman to land a double flip and Euro X in competition.
What is freeskiing, you ask?! Freeskiing or Newschool skiing involves tricks, jumps, and terrain park features, such as rails, boxes, jibs, or other obstacles. The freeskiing movement grew out of the freestyle skiing and snowboarding movement and is now regarded as a separate sport. On April 6, 2011, the International Olympic Committee announced the addition of the men’s and women’s ski halfpipe and slopestyle events to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
I bet we’re going to hear a lot more about Jamie Crane-Mauzy in the coming years – and hopefully we will see her on the podium at the 2014 Winter Olympics!
