Last weekend Waterville Valley was literally buzzing with people competing in the Black Fly Tri events. It was amazing to watch athletes of all ages and ability levels push themselves through the swimming, biking and running courses.
I saw a number of locals, including Meagan Boucher who works at the Waterville Valley Recreation Department. Meagan was the women’s winner and 8th overall in the 5k race. The Recreation Department was well represented in the 5k. Staffer and Waterville Valley resident Vladi Highland finished 4th in his age group and 10th overall in the 5k. Other Rec. Dept. staffers participating included Gillen Schofield, Faith Barnum, Alison Clark, Eliza McKinnon, Susan Schofield, Tom Quackenbush, Annie Schwartz, and Liz Gibbs. I also saw Lidia & Richard Dale-Mesaros, Deb McKinnon, and Tiffany Hodges complete the 5k. Mark Mauro from the Snowy Owl told me that other Waterville Valleyites participated, too, including 16-year-old Elizabeth Powell who came in 3rd in her age group, Yasmine King, and Joseph Leader (age 76!), who finished with a time of 41:57.
The indomitable Chris Hodges (director of Waterville Valley’s Department of Public Safety) and his son, Kyle, successfully completed the Black Fly Triathlon – Lord of the Flies.
Congratulations to everyone involved – from the event organizers at EndorFun Sports, to the Waterville Valley businesses and lodges for hosting the crowds, and to the participants – it was a GREAT weekend at Waterville Valley!
