Waterville Valley Tennis Center will host the 33rd annual New Hampshire Open Tennis Championships at its 18 red clay court tennis complex from July 18 to 20.
The U.S. Tennis Association New England event is the one of the most prestigious tennis events of the year. The $10,000 tourney attracts top ranked New England and collegiate players from the eastern summer tennis circuit.
“We have had several players through the years who have been ranked top 100 in the world, so the caliber of tennis is quite good,” USPTA Director and center owner, Tom Gross, Jr. told SnoCountry.com. “The tennis can be as good as the pros, just different names.”
Play begins on Friday afternoon, July 18, and continues throughout the day Saturday with singles and doubles, and concludes with the semi-finals and finals Sunday, July 20.
Spectators are welcome all three days at no charge,” says Gross. “There is no better venue for watching tennis than our sunken Rod Laver Arena court, so come on out, bring family and friends, some beverages, and enjoy the great tennis.”
For years, the Waterville Valley Tennis Center has been recognized by Tennis Magazine as one of the “Top 50” tennis resorts in America, along with being named one of the Top 5 Best Bargains and one of the Top 5 Family Resorts. In 2014, Tennis Resorts Online ranked Waterville Valley Tennis No. 25 in the world, along with a No. 4 for Best Value.
“There’s an uptick in the desire for lessons after an event like this,” Gross said. “Tennis is one of the fastest growing sports, and we’re proud to foster that enthusiasm.”
For amateurs inspired to pick up a racket, in addition to complimentary spectating at all of the N.H. open events, Waterville Valley is home to the Freedom Pass, a pass that entitles each member of a family staying at any participating Freedom Pass hotel to free tennis, along with golf, bike rentals, Athletic Club access, chair lift rides, boat rentals and more.
“There is great tennis in this Shangri-la, an island oasis in the forest,” said Gross.
Waterville Valley has long been the tennis destination in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, entertaining thousands of tennis players through the years. The Tennis Center has daily clinic or multi-day packages available for all ages and needs.
