Nordic Silver Streaks: Gigi’s Report

December 30, 2018

Gigi Estes writes the best recaps of the Nordic Silver Streaks meet-ups. Here’s her latest installment from Dec. 19th.

Another perfect day for skiing. Deep blue sky, sun, no breeze, 22°F, when nine Nordics gathered, enjoying a blazing fire at the Adventure Center, which provided a warm holiday spirit. Two Nordics snowshoed at the South End, the others drove to the North End. Starting at Osceola, we found the trail freshly groomed and tracked, with a bit of powder on the surface. The corduroy as well as the tracks were still mostly untouched. We observed quite a few animal tracks, probably fox. Water was still gurgling in the brooks; the rocks were decorated with icy, frilly edges. At the Osceola/Moose Run junction two Nordics chose to ski up, the others headed toward Wicked Easy, where the two faster skiers soon rejoined us. It was a big day for Larry, who celebrated his 83rd birthday today. He entertained us, creating several funny limericks on the spur of the moment. Back at the Nordic Center we sang happy birthday and presented him with a candle on a cupcake. Thanks, Ken, for getting the candle.

A lively and happy group of Silver Streaks enjoyed the après ski at the Nordic Center. Larry arrived a little late. He had done a few downhill runs after lunch before he joined us again! Wow! He considered the skiing his best birthday present and hopes to repeat it on many more birthdays. Way to go, Larry!

The next Nordic ski date is Wednesday, January 2. A classic clinic is scheduled for January 9 and a skate-ski clinic on January 16, weather permitting. January 23 will be the make-up date if we need it. Two more clinics are scheduled for February.

A merry Christmas and a happy, snow-rich New Year,
