Gigi Estes, head Nordic Silver Streak, writes about the final meet-up and ski of the season on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Waterville Valley Resort…
First day of spring. And a foot of fresh, fluffy snow. What a present from Mother Nature and Father Winter! It was 25°F and cloudy at the Nordic Center for our special outing today. Only a couple of us wore old outfits or had bamboo poles. Most said they couldn’t fit into their knickers. Hmmm! Things must have shrunk. Nineteen Nordics headed to the North End where we loaded the pulk with all the goodies going to the yurt. Thank you, Paul, for pulling the pulk up the hill. Brice, the groomer, was just ahead of us with his Piston Bully and the trails were absolutely perfect. At the yurt Bob shoveled the door free for us to get inside. The sun even appeared as the Nordics were off skiing in the winter wonderland, When they returned – wow – there was a spread of yummy food all laid out. Paul and Bob did champagne duty and popped the corks. They landed in deep snow, a thank you goes to Alan who located them. Bob’s had sailed just a little further than Paul’s. The distance measured 10 1/3 pole lengths, translating into 48’ 6”; a good distance but not a new record. Our award for the Nordic with the best attendance this season went to Karen. Congratulations, Karen! And thank you so very much for your generous gift to me. You are all so kind and so wonderful. After the yummy lunch we packed up, cleaned and headed back out. With all the fresh snow and the low temperatures the skiing could last still for a long time. We will meet again next Wednesday for another Nordic Silver Streaks outing.
