Silver Streaks Challenge Cup Results

March 7, 2011

Following is Terry Roper’s write-up about the Silver Streaks Challenge Cup Race, held here at Waterville Valley on Wednesday, March 2.

Flurries greeted the 61 racers who arrived at Waterville Valley for the annual Challenge Cup Race hosted by the Silver Streaks

Silver Streaks volunteers Fran Fernandes, Janet Carlisle, Laurie Pichnarcik, Bette Beauregard and Natalie Thompson expeditiously registered all the racers.

The snowfall got a little heavier once the racers approached the start of the race, which began at the longer Giant Slalom start on Tommy’s World Cup slope.  But, all went smoothly due to the great course set by Ed McLennan and Fran.  The order of racers was controlled by volunteer hill coordinators John Palmieri and Kim Byrd.  Things got rutty by the second run, but everyone had the opportunity to do their best on the challenging course.  By 2 p.m. everyone was ready to party and headed up to Buckets for some Coors Light served by bartender Eddie and great food prepared by John in the cafeteria and arranged by manager Hollie Jones.  Waterville Valley Resort’s new president, Bob Fries, spoke to the group about the beginnings of the Silver Streaks program, and director of skiing, Josef Jung, began the awards presentation with his famous yodel.

Fastest Woman: Joan Hannah (71 yrs.) from Loon Mtn.
Fastest Man: Chuck Thorndike (65 yrs.) from Gunstock.
NOTE:  These two winners had the fastest runs (not using handicapping) AND they were not the youngest in the race.  Once again, experience wins over youth!
