Team Waterville

January 2, 2019

I have fond memories of my very brief ski racing ‘career’ (a relative term). When I interviewed for my first post-college job at Waterville Valley Group Sales (now defunct), one of the first questions I was asked was, ‘Can you ski?’  After answering yes, the next question was, ‘Do you have racing experience?’ Although the answer was no, they hired me anyway.  Despite my lack of racing experience, my colleagues informed me that I was ‘required’ to join their laid back beer league team.  Yeah, right.  They took it very seriously.  I was a nervous wreck and felt sick to my stomach before every race.  Somehow I still managed to bring home some bronze and silver medals.  I may have even snagged a gold (but that could be in my dreams).  I was just happy I didn’t break any limbs.  I don’t think I even fell. Eternal embarrassment avoided.

Hindsight being 20/20, Team Waterville was actually fun. The competition was good-natured. It helped elevate my skiing ability and confidence.  The apres was an opportunity to meet and socialize with other skiers, many of whom were like me – less than stellar racers – and that was okay.

You, too, can join the fun competition of Team Waterville’s Monday Race League, sponsored by Coors Light. The 9-week race series starts on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019. Race time is 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Apres parties start at 4 p.m. Membership dues are $250 for a team of seven racers; $40 for an individual racer. Individuals will be grouped together as a team if needed.

Race League registration is at 9 a.m. on Jan. 7 at the Snowsports desk in the Base Lodge. All racers must sign in and receive an assigned bib number for the season in order to compete. All racers must also complete the Waterville Valley 2019 waiver.

Waterville Valley Ski Resort offers $20 race day lift tickets to registered Team Waterville participants (valid only on Team Waterville race days; non-transferable).

There are other rules and regs. If you’re interested in those types of things, send your questions or desire to join Team Waterville to:  wv_nastar@hotmail.com.
