When I was interviewing for my first post-college job in Waterville Valley in 1981, the woman interviewing me seemed less interested in my college degree, work history or job skills and much more interested in my skiing ability. “Have you skied competitively?” she asked. “Ah, no,” I answered. She looked a little disappointed, so I added, “But I’m an excellent skier!” The interviewer scribbled some notes on her pad. Hours later I was offered a job. Months later I was handed a Team Waterville race bib as I stood, knees shaking, at the top of the World Cup slope. My first race. A Dual GS. I wanted to vomit. I finished my first run and was absolutely exhilarated. I won my first silver medal. The look on my co-workers faces…priceless!
You, too, can participate in Team Waterville’s Monday Race League (known in the old days…and still unofficially…as the Beer League). This 9-week race series starts on Jan. 9, 2017. It’s fun, friendly competition made even more enjoyable by local apres parties. Don’t have a season pass? No problem.
