The Latest News from Waterville Valley Ski Resort

August 31, 2012

Here’s the latest news from the folks at Waterville Valley Ski Area…

Family Vacations, Adventure Trails and a Learning Park are New for 2012-13

Waterville Valley Resort, New Hampshire’s year-round family mountain resort, is rededicating itself this season to families passionate about winter sports and enjoying the winter experience together.

Started in 1966 as a family resort by ski racing legend Tom Corcoran, a 1956 and 1960 Olympian, Waterville Valley Resort will re-emphasize its appeal as a family skiing and riding destination in 2012-13 by unveiling new Family “Winter Unlimited” Vacation Packages, a new Adventure Trail for kids, and a cross-country village loop serviced by snowmaking.

The four-season destination, located just minutes from exit 28 off Interstate 93 in New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest, will introduce Family “Winter Unlimited” Vacation Packages – 5-1/2 days of lift tickets (starting Sunday afternoon), five nights lodging, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snow tubing, swimming, ice skating, family mountain breakfast, family ice skating party, family swimming pool party, a family dinner with entertainment, and more. Winter Unlimited Family Vacation Packages will also be offered for three- and four-day midweek stays.

Chris Sununu, Waterville Valley Resort’s CEO, said, “When the Sununu family purchased Waterville Valley Resort in late October 2010, our intent was to focus on family winter vacations. Not only skiing and snowboarding but also a full complement of fun activities for families to do together after the lifts close. The new Winter Unlimited Family Vacation Package is just the beginning of our family vacation initiatives,” Sununu said.

The new Kids Adventure Trail, located in the glades just off the Valley Run trail, will feature multiple routes through the woods for skiers and riders, special stops to explore the Bear caves, hidden animal figures, and other surprises.

For beginning skiers or riders, the new Kids Learning Park will feature pint-size terrain features to make instruction more fun.

Waterville Valley Resort will be adding snowmaking to a 2 to 3 km cross-country trail that will loop from the Town Square into the forest and back. The snowmaking loop is part of Waterville Valley Resort’s Nordic Center that offers over 70 km of groomed and tracked trails through the White Mountain National Forest.

Waterville Valley Resort’s new skiing ambassador is Hannah Kearney, Olympic Gold medalist in the Freestyle Mogul event (Vancouver 2010) and alumna of the Waterville Valley Academy. She will be on-hand several days over the Christmas holidays and in between training to offer free mogul clinics for young and old alike.

The fun continues with appearances by Wally the Green Monster, the Boston Red Sox mascot who, well, doesn’t ski quite the same as Hannah, but is still a fan favorite. As the Official Mountain Resort of the Boston Red Sox, Waterville Valley Resort plans to offer special “Fenway Friday” lift ticket promotions (midweek, non-holiday) during the winter season.

What Else is New?

* For those who want to pay as they go, the Resort is holding the line on lift ticket prices for 2012-13.

* Plans continue for expansion to the adjacent Green Peak area with a new high-speed quad and an additional eight trails on 60 acres. The project is moving through the U.S. Forest Service permit approval process. Waterville Valley Resort’s largest expansion in 30 years could be ready for the 2013-14 season.

* Waterville Valley Resort’s popular Frequent Skier/Rider Card now has direct-to-lift technology allowing skiers and riders to walk directly to the lift without stopping at a ticket window. It offers special discounted lift ticket rates for adults, teens and juniors all winter long.

* The North Face Park & Pipe Open Series, featuring the Saturday night Big Air event, returns Feb. 23-24, 2013, with a $20,000 purse; the Mountain Dew Vertical Challenge is scheduled for Jan. 26, 2013; and the Burton Mountain Festival will be held Feb 8-10, 2013.

* Popular Starry Nights on-mountain dinners and torchlight parades return Dec. 29 and Feb. 16.
