Thrifty skiing: Resorts offer special deals to lure vacationers in tough economy

The Saturday after Thanksgiving, dozens of families bundled up and headed to Town Square, Waterville Valley’s village center. Santa was to arrive by dog sled, and visitors wanted to welcome him. Red-cheeked children lined the bridge by Corcoran’s Pond waiting to spy St. Nick.

Finally, he and his dog team emerged from a wooded trail, drawing applause and cheers. Team Santa braked by the gazebo, and admirers surrounded the grand old man with the enthusiasm of fans at a Brad Pitt premiere.
