Waterville Telemarker Places 2nd at Nationals

March 15, 2014

A New Hampshire high schooler with Waterville Valley roots had a phenomenal showing at the 2014 Telemark Nationals held last month in Steamboat Springs, CO.

According to a story by Ryan O’Leary in, Sarah Carley of Brentwood, NH “came 12.96 seconds shy (six-event total) of being crowned champion…She was edged in a tiebreaker by Madi McKinstry, a student at Montana State University who has long become the face of women’s racing in this sport.”

O’Leary wrote, “Sarah Carley was 10 years old, and the mountains in northern New Hampshire were already too small.

“She was the product of a ski family, one with long-time roots to the Waterville Valley Resort. She took up alpine racing and snowboarding, but all along longed for something bigger and more challenging.

“Then, she stumbled upon her skiing niche: the new-age sport of telemark ski racing.

“It’s all part of a whirlwind ride that has taken Carley from the modest slopes of Waterville Valley to a spot on the United States Telemark national team. With monetary sponsors to her name, Carley, 18, can call herself a professional ski racer.

“It all started at Waterville, where she discovered a group of skiers practicing the more obscure telemark technique. The boot, in this sport, is attached at the toe, leaving the heel free and the skier the ability to stride gracefully through turns. Carley was intrigued. Her first telemark sessions started there, using makeshift equipment until she could grow into the real thing.”
