Two venerable New England institutions – the Boston Red Sox and Waterville Valley Resort – are teaming up under a new three-year deal making them corporate partners through 2014.
A mountain resort and a ball team? Consider the history: Fenway Park, home of the Sox, just celebrated its 100th birthday last month and New Englanders have enjoyed the natural beauty and mountain recreation in the White Mountains since the mid-1800s. In fact, a hotel opened in Waterville Valley in 1868 hosting summer guests from Boston who sought the cool temperatures and clean air of the mountains.
The new sponsorship agreement, naming Waterville Valley Resort the Official Mountain Resort of the Boston Red Sox, was announced today by Waterville Valley CEO Chris Sununu, and Red Sox EVP/COO Sam Kennedy.
Sununu said, “The Boston Red Sox and Waterville Valley Resort share much of the same market. We are in the business of providing an exciting and fun opportunity for New England families to spend time together. It is a perfect partnership.”
The terms of the deal include Waterville Valley lift ticket give-aways, exposure on the centerfield scoreboard and in the EMC level suites, presence in the Fenway Park concourse, and sampling opportunities for deals on lift tickets, activities, and other promotions to fans at the park, according to Tom Gross, Jr., Waterville Valley’s President of Valley Operations. Gross added, “we’ve only just begun to think of the special packages we’ll offer Sox fans up here in the White Mountain National Forest all year-long.”
Red Sox executive Sam Kennedy said, “Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox and Waterville Valley have created memories for generations. Both will continue to create memories for many years to come, which makes this partnership so special for many.”
Adds Chris Sununu, “When the Sununu’s bought Waterville Valley Resort in October 2010 we did it with the goal of returning New Hampshire skiing to the premier experience we all grew up with. Joining the Boston Red Sox family is a great example of how we are going to expand and move forward with marketing partners that share the same New England market.”
Sununu continues, “The Boston Red Sox were a huge part of my family growing up. To partner with such a first class organization is a dream come true, but to be honest, I’m just looking forward to getting Wally the Green Monster on a snowboard.”
